A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these medications must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
